The 4th Industrial Revolution is Underway! Will a Robot Take Your Job
The 4th Industrial Revolution is Underway Will a Robot Take Your JobThe 4th Industrial Revolution is Underway Will a Robot Take Your JobThe 4th Industrial Revolution is underway. You may not have known it, but you may have observed the subsequent transformations. The advancements in genetics, biotechnology, nanotechnology, robotics, 3D printing etc. you hear or read about or personally have experience with, are the outcomes of the 4th Industrial Revolution. Its impact on the global workforce is projected to result in 7.1 million job losses over the period 2015-2020.The study conducted by the World Economic Forum, highlights that the technological revolution that is ongoing will lead to fundamental transformation in jobs, such as job displacement, widening skill gap, heightened labor productivity and job creation. When 5.1 million jobs get displaced, 2 million jobs will be created due to the change. While advancements in technology (AI, software, machinery, robots etc.) will increase th e efficiency of employees within a workplace and produce cost-effective solutions for the company, they will render certain job roles obsolete. For example, most office and administrative jobs, such as bookkeepers and accountants are already being replaced by AI and software. However, new job types such as organizational development specialists will also be born out of the need to keep up with the change. The research shows that nearly 65% of the kids entering primary school today will end up working in jobs that dont yet exist, and the chances are that within the next 10 years, most jobs done exclusively by humans today, will be replaced by machines, robots, AI etc. This requires future-proofing oneself by developing certain skills that are exclusive to humans and cannot be replicated by technology. Negotiation and decision-making skills, critical thinking skills and improved emotional intelligence are some of these abilities that will be demanded by jobs in the future. Working on im proving oneself thus is the fail-safe way to neutralize the threats caused by the 4th Industrial Revolution.Created by CreatelyShare Your Feedback or Ideas in the Comments

Finances How to save on everyday fees and charges
Finances How to save on everyday fees and dienstgradsFinances How to save on everyday fees and chargesThis year, BradTheBoo and I have been getting ur personal finances in shape in a MAJOR way. After making some big boss moves last year (hello, real estate purchase numero dos), we wanted to get back on track with savings plans and paying off credit card debt that wed accumulated. So in the past few months, we spent a ton of time getting organized with Mint and a new financial planning spreadsheet that ur financial advisor, Cris Caruso, got us all tischset up with.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreIm notlage gonna lie at first, I welches totally overwhelmed. But once I got all our accounts connected to Mint and our budget welches set up, I have to say I feel so much more organized about our money than ever before. If youre in my inner circle you probably already know this, because Ive been blabbing about it to all my friends and family It just feels so good to get your finances organized.Anyway, one of the unexpected byproducts of getting on track with Mint, is that all of a sudden every single expense and fee was now glaringly obvious to me.Yikes my SundayNew York Timessubscription more thandoubledincost since my 1-year introductory deal had just expired? And OMG, our cable bill had gone up like crazy for the same reason Not to mention, I started noticing all those monthly maintenance fees on our checking accounts and late fees on credit card payments that were piling up, too.Consider QuittingIt all started with myNewYorkTimessubscription. I absolutely love getting the paper delivered each Sunday so I can read stories aloud in the truck on the way up to skiing in the Rocky Mountains. Or just to curl up with on a lazy Sunday morning with my giant cup of coffee. Not only do I love getting the paper, I also love supporting journalism and the free press in the process. So you can imagine how serious we are about reducing our debt and balancing our budget when I talked it out with Brad and decided the paper was just costing too much to justify. We needed to save some funds, so I was prepared to quit. I didnt like it, but I figured I could just re-subscribe later on when we had fewer bills to pay.I logged into my subscriber profile and chatted with an agent through their help desk. Within a few minutes of explaining that I was closing down my account for personal finance reasons, I was genuinely surprised to see a counter-offer in my chat thread I had not expected that. They reduced the cost dramatically to keep me from quitting and I was over the moon. It went to effect right away, and I felt way less guilty for continuing to receive the paper each week. In fact, it made me cherish it even more.Call Them All And OftenMy experience withThe NewYorkTimesgotmethinking what other recurring monthly expenses could I reduce? It was especially impo rtant for me to focus on those repetitive monthly charges because for those, my negotiation efforts would pay off over and over again.Next on the list was one of our highest monthly expenses cable and internet. Having fehlte nicht viel internet is important for a web-based business owner like me, but did we really need cable? I logged into our Xfinity account to see what we were really paying for and how the price had gone up so much over the past year.In talking things over with Brad, we were willing to cut back to save some money, so I called up Xfinity to see what they could do, especially because I had discovered a major error upon logging into the back-end we had accidentally been paying for an added Showtime package for a few months that we didnt need, use, or want. When I called them up, I explained the Showtime situation and how wed just discovered the accidental overcharge. I remained friendly, patient, and appreciative throughout what turned into quite a long call, which go es a long when youre asking a company representative to essentially do you a favor.Ask If They Can Sweeten the DealOnce the overcharge situation was looked into and refunded, I asked the customer service representative what we could do to reduce our bill. We loved our service, I told him, but we really needed to cut back on our expenses. Is there any way you can help? I asked. And he put me on a brief hold to find out.Yall its that simple. When he rejoined the line, he mentioned that there was a deal currently available to reduce our bill by $20 a month if we would be willing to commit to a 2-year contract. I asked about the penalty for early termination and was told it was a nominal one-time fee. This was an easy Yes from us because we really dont foresee needing to change our cable and internet again anytime soon.By simply asking if there was any way for them to get us a better deal and by spending, frankly, quite a few minutes on the phone we were able to reduce expense by $24 0 a yearNow, Im not sure if it made a big difference that we did a lot of this negotiating in January when lots of companies are offering special sales, but I figure its worth mentioning, just in case.Be Fierce About Finance FeesOnce I had conquered my newspaper and cable and internet companies, I was totally hooked Up next were the big banks, which is our case consists primarily of Bank of America, where Brad and I have some checking accounts and credit cards, too.The first thing I did was call up regarding both of our credit cards and simply ask if, based on our good credit history and our long-time loyalty as customers for more than a decade, they could reduce our interest rates. A few years ago I was successful in that endeavor, but this time, I got a no on both attempts. Wah-wah.But then a few weeks went by and thanks to being all set up and organized on Mint, I was alerted via email to the fact that Brads credit card had charged him an interest paymentanda $25 late fee, even t hough he had completely paid off the card albeit a few days later than the monthly due date. I thought that was ridiculous, but kept my vocal tone pleasant, when I called up to once again express how, as longtime loyal customers, we would appreciate it if those fees could be reversed.Interestingly, the representative was kind enough to ask me an important follow-up question. He said, Was there any specific reason or extenuating circumstance that caused you to be late on this payment? Now lets be real. They were essentially telling me what I needed to say next that there was some reason behind the late payment. So I said we were out of town and dealing with some family things which, to be clear, doesnt actually impact ones ability to make a credit card payment, but whatever. Andthatwas all it took Boom fee removed. Interest charge removed.Time = MoneyThis whole experience has taught me something really valuable spending time on your finances can save you some serious coin. Within that reality, though, lies a great injustice. Because for those of us most burnt out, stressed out, and overworked its pretty unlikely that youre going to have 45 minutes to spare to negotiate your rates with the cable company. Or to ask for forgiveness from a utility company. And that irony is not lost on me.But if youre the kind of person whodoeshavetheprivilegeoftime. Your spare time on a Sunday morning might be better spent making a few of these phone calls as opposed to never ever, ever missing brunch. My new rule of thumb is to do a full financial check-up on all our monthly recurring expenses every 6 months or so and to call and ask outright if these companies can do anything to sweeten the deal for me.Because its worth the time to advocate for ourselves in bigandlittleways like this.Give it a goSo now Im challenging you take a look at your recurring expenses this month and commit to calling at least one of those companies on your list and ask about getting a better deal. Re port back to me by commenting below on how it goes. And with any luck, a single win like the one I experienced first, will get you rolling on a series of negotiations that not only help balance your budget but also help your practice the fine art of being pleasantly persistent and negotiating on your own behalf. This article first appeared on Bossed Up. Choosing a Career When Youre Interested in Everything
Choosing a Career When Youre Interested in EverythingChoosing a Career When Youre Interested in EverythingFor many young adults, entering the workforce can be jarring. Throughout your life, youve been told the importance of becoming a well-rounded individual. So you tried different activities, studied various subjects, and developed a wide variety of interests. Then you have to pick a career path. Suddenly, it feels like you need to pick between your love of technology or species politics or cooking. You have to decide what will be your career and what will be demoted to a weekend hobby. Or do you? There will be tough decisions. Some interests will have to take priority over others. But if youre smart in your choices, it is possible to find a flexible career path that doesnt confine you to a suffocating box. You just have to take some time to explore all of the options open to you. Heres how to choose a career when youre interested in more than one thing Figure Out What You Cant L ive Without Doing A Gallup survey found that among employees who had been with their company for more than three months, 60 percent stayed because their job allowed them to do what they do best. That factor had an even bigger impact on employees satisfaction than having an increased income. Why is that? Its simple- people are happier when they get to go into work every day and do what they were meant to do. The trick is figuring out what your calling is. The first step in that process is thinking about what makes a dull task more bearable for you. For example, imagine that you had to spend an entire day cleaning Would it seem less odious if you could work with a team? Or if you had to solve riddles to correctly identify the cleaning products you needed? Your answer to these questions will help you get to the core of what you need out of a career. To dig deeper into what motivates you, consider taking online personality assessments or using career exploration apps. You might be surp rised by what they reveal about you and how they help you narrow down your options. Find an Industry That Interests You Your education does make it easier- or more difficult- to get certain types of jobs, but it doesnt completely limit the industries you have to work in. If you majored in biology, youre elend restricted to just medical or scientific fields. If youve taken classes in computer programming, that doesnt mean you have to get a job in the tech industry. Many of your skills are transferable from one industry to another. A Burning Glass study found that research skills were ranked in the top 10 most important skills for various industries, ranging from marketing and PR to healthcare and IT. Look into a variety of industries and find out whichskills are most important in them. Think outside the box and consider what your unique experience can bring to an industry. For example, say youve always loved music, but are tone deaf. Instead of learning the guitar, you studied we b design. You can always embrace your interest in music and use your skills by designing websites for bands or record labels. Look for Organizations That Embrace Collaboration Whatever career you choose, chances are its responsibilities and duties wont satisfy each and every one of your interests. Thats just the way of the world. But that doesnt mean you need to be locked away, never interacting with people from other departments ever again. An organization that encourages cross-departmental projects and collaboration can enable you to be exposed to other things, even if theyre not part of your job. If your job is in sales, for instance, you can work with members of the design and marketing teams while creating literature on your products. Or with programmers to create a new purchasing page for the website. Truly collaborative organizations offer you fluidity in your role. Of course, youll still have your designated duties, but you should have opportunities to engage in a range of related activities as well. When considering which company youd like to work for, reach out to current employees and ask them how teamwork is actually practiced in the office. Find out how cross-departmental projects are structured to see how involved an employee can be with different aspects of the process. Focus on Organizations With Career Development As someone who is interested in many different things, chances are you wont be satisfied unless you can continually experience new things and learn new skills. That means youll need an organization that supports career development. And just because a job seems like a great fit right now, that doesnt mean it will continue to fit in the future. What will make the difference in your long-term happiness is how well the organization supports your curiosity. When researching employment opportunities, find out how a company approaches training and development. Do they put all employees through the same generic training and rote dist ribution of responsibilities? Or do they allow employees to choose what they learn and explore skills and duties not directly related to their current position? If you dont feel like youll have the chance to continue exploring different interests, chances are its not the right place for you. Take the Time to Consider Your Options Being a well-rounded person is never a bad thing. But it can make it difficult to define the right career path. As long as you take the time to look at all your options, youll see that you can find a career that satisfies your desire for multi-dimensional work, instead of pigeonholing you into one role for your entire career. - Alex Li is a co-founder of PathSourcea comprehensive online career exploration tool that allows users to discover informational interviews on video about a wide range of jobs and career paths.

Meet Lauren Greene SVP of Enterprise Applications at Dow Jones
Meet Lauren Greene SVP of Enterprise Applications at Dow Jones Dow Jones has supported Lauren throughout her career, from competitive baton twirler to SVP of enterprise applications. Looking for support in your career, too? Apply to Dow Jones here bit.ly/dowjonesjobs One of the biggest challenges in almost all industries today is achieving gender parity. Gender diversity provides huge benefits in the workplace. pWhile some industries have made significant advancements in gender diversity, some industries lag further behind... and the construction industry is well-known for being in the latter category. If someone says, construction workers, youll likely picture a group of men in yellow hard hats analyzing an architects plans or laying bricks on top of a scaffold. And men at work signs only help to reinforce this image.pThis stereotype is rooted in reality. When welches the last time you actually spotted a woman on a construction site? Or h ired a female plumber or carpenter? Your answer is most likely never. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statisticsreports that only 3.4% of the total of 8.3 million construction employees are women.pBut the construction industry has a lot more to offer than steel-toed boots and hard hats, and it needs women to help advance the industry in this era of rapid change. Here are 5 reasons why women joining the workforce or looking to make a pivot should consider a career in construction.h21. Fuel Innovation/h2pNot only is diversity the socially and morally right thing to do, but it is also actually an excellent business strategy. pResearch presented in the Harvard Business Reviewshows that diverse teams develop more innovative ideas. This is further supported by a study conducted by Gallupon the performance of gender-diverse teams versus single-gender teams, which found that the difference in backgrounds and perspectives led to better business performance and problem-solving. h22. Capitalize o n Demand/h2pThe construction industry is currently experiencing a labor shortage. The industry itself is booming and projected to be one of the fastest-growing industries, with total spending projected to exceed $1.45 trillion in 2023/a. However, most construction companies are unable to meet the rising demand. pAccording to the Associated General Contractors of America/a, more than 80% of contractors are experiencing difficulties filling hourly craft positions that represent the bulk of the construction workforce.pAnd demand isnt limited to individual contributor roles. Given the industry boom, there are a number of open stable and high-paying roles (any project managers out there?) waiting for the right candidateh23. Leadership Opportunities/h2pAccording to the Bureau of Labor Statistics/a, women compose only 7.7% of the total 1 million managerial positions in construction.br/pBut given the highly collaborative nature of construction work, more women in leadership roles would help drive innovation and enhance productivity.Furthermore, as a woman in construction in a leadership position, youd have the unique opportunity to drive change for the industry and make it a more attractive option for other women.h24. High-Income Potential/h2pSalaries for many skilled positions in construction are on the rise, making a construction career a prime choice for women looking for a high-paying job,pThe 2018 Construction Craft Salary Surveyconducted by the National Center for Construction Education and Research revealed that salaries for many skilled craft areas are increasing. Project managers and project supervisors topped the list at $92,523 and $88,355, respectively. The next set of highest-paying jobs include those of combo welders ($71,067), instrumentation technicians ($70,080), pipe welders ($69,222), power line workers ($68,262) and industrial electricians ($67,269). Of the 32 categories of workers in the survey, 19 positions earned an average salary of $60,000 or higher.h25. Sense of accomplishment/h2p The construction industry can give employees a unique sense of achievement. Yes, the job is stressful and the work can be demanding, but nothing beats the feeling of being able to build something from the ground up. pHow many professionals in other industries can point at a school, a hospital, or a skyscraper and say I helped build that?pThe construction industry has a long way to go in combating gender bias and supporting women in the workforce, but given the current demand for workers, theres no better time to pick up a sledgehammer (figurative or literal) and smash the gender stereotypes plaguing the construction industry.

Stop Feeling Guilty About Quitting Your Job - The Muse
Stop Feeling Guilty About Quitting Your Job - The MuseStop Feeling Guilty About Quitting Your Job A little over two years ago, I welches seven months into my first real job. Full-time, salaried, benefits- the whole package. But the honeymoon period was over. It took me half a year to realize that, though the amenities at this company were beyond stellar, I just wasnt happy. And I couldnt stay solely because of the perks.Id made my final decision As soon as I was offered a new opportunity, I was leaving. But I felt guilty. Really, uncomfortably, guilty. My manager at the time was a smart, kind, and patient individual, and he made it clear that he valued me and wanted me to be happy. But the reality was, unless he created a completely new position for me- a role that didnt even exist at the company yet- there wasnt anything he could do to make me like my role more. Bottom line It was a bad fit and I needed out. But because he truly respected me, even though I was an entry-level minion ( or at least, thats how some of my colleagues made me feel), I felt horrible about starting up my job search again. And I was desperately afraid of hurting his feelings. On top of that, I also knew he was wildly busy. If I left, more and more tasks would pile onto his already overflowing plate. This wasnt the only source of my guilt, though. Growing up, society had taught me that you choose a career and you stay there- forever. While I knew this wasnt necessarily the case anymore, I couldnt help but think, How can I leave after only seven months? This company had invested in me, taken a risk on me, and I was going to leave them high and dry, abandoning my commitment and appearing unreliable? For weeks, I was so guilt-ridden that I spoke to everyone I knew about it (sorry, guys). One day, as I was walking from the metro station to my apartment, I called my grandmother. When the conversation got to the topic of work, I expressed my current mindset. After a few moments, she said to me, N ow, dont take this the wrong way, but your company was fine before you, and theyll be just fine after you. Drop the mic.Wait a second- did my grandmother just tell me I didnt matter? Basically, yes. But she wasnt saying it to be unkind. She was speaking the truth. The very sobering truth To my company, I was leid irreplaceable. In no way am I suggesting that those I worked for didnt care about me. That would be a flat out lie. What I am saying, is that I wasnt vital to the companys success. Yes, I did my job well, even if I didnt understand the healthcare and IT lingo half of the time (read 95% of the time). But there were plenty of other people out there who could do it well, too. And, furthermore, there were likely some who could do it much better. My company would be just as happy with any of those candidates, and, until then, theyd redistribute my work and move forward relatively seamlessly.Again, I know- its no fun to recognize that your employer just isnt that into you (rejecti on is hard). Sure, your boss probably doesnt want you to leave, but it also wont be the end of the world if you do. And, furthermore, if he ever had to dismiss you from your position for the good of the company, hed probably do it before hed volunteer to quit out of protest. Its nothing personal- its just the way the world works. As Jenny Foss, Muse Master Coach and President of Ladder Recruiting Group, LLC, explains, If your employer were facing budget cuts or layoffs, and your job was going to be among those impacted, do you think that your managers or the HR director would spend endless hours wringing their hands with guilt before they alerted you of the layoff? Probably not. Sure, on a personal level they may feel badly. Were all human, after all. But theyd surely realize that this is business, and in business, difficult decisions sometimes need to be made. And you know what? That street goes both ways. This is your life. And in your life, difficult decisions sometimes need to be made. When my grandmother gave me this advice, something clicked. I cant say I was completely guilt-free from that point forward (sneaking around and job searching is always going to feel a bit sketchy to me), but a substantial burden was lifted off my shoulders. Maybe it was because I wasnt soliciting advice- I didnt ask, What do you think I should do, or Do you think its OK for me to look for a new position? She was simply speaking her mind, saying what she thought without any prompting. But mostly, I think its because her words reminded me whats important in my life- for me, its my constant support system. Its the friends and family who I know will be by my side rain or shine. I know in my heart my grandmother will always love me. Hands down. No decision I make about my career can change that.In a way, this revelation brought me back down to earth. It reminded me that my job is not the most important thing in my world. Nor is the company I work at. And so, I shouldnt be so torn u p about something that isnt part of my foundation. Something that wont love me no matter what. At the end of the day, I needed to do what was best for me. And that was leaving. ASAP.If you decide to leave your company- thats perfectly fine. Do I think you should leave every position you have after seven months? Nah, probably not a good idea. But if youve determined its definitely time for you to move on, do it. Dont let guilt hold you back. Just make sure you quit with grace. (P.S. Thanks, Mom-mom. Youre the best.)

Rev Up Your 2018 Holiday Hiring with These Time-Honored and Oh-So-New Tactics
Rev Up Your 2018 Holiday Hiring with These Time-Honored and Oh-So-New TacticsRev Up Your 2018 Holiday Hiring with These Time-Honored and Oh-So-New TacticsRev Up Your 2018 Holiday Hiring with These Time-Honored and Oh-So-New Tactics BortzIs your business planning to hire holiday workers this year? If so, nows the time to rev up your recruitment strategy.Todays competitive labor market is likely to put the squeeze on 2018 holiday hiring for companies large and small. The labor market is tight in almost every major metro area across the country, which makes attracting seasonal employees more difficult even before we enter the holiday season, says Andrew Challenger, vice president at outplacement and search firm Challenger, Gray Christmas in Chicago. One sign of the fierce competition for seasonal hires this year J.C. Penney Co. and Kohls Corp. began posting help-wanted ads for the holiday season in June. The big retailers are already out there laying seeds in the marketplace for local ta lent, says Jonathan Means, president of TrueBlue Workforce Management Group. That extends across a wide range of industries that are looking for local talent, he adds. That means small companies like yours will likely be competing for talent with bigger companies. While your small company may feel the squeeze this season, dont forget that your company culture and unique benefits have the ability to attract candidates, particularly with Gen Y talent.Perhaps youve already started to look for holiday hires. If not, no worries. Weve gathered some expert hiring tactics to help your business be well-positioned for a successful holiday season.Build local buzz offlineIn the same way your company does outreach to attract local customers, youll want to invest in similar tactics to reach talent in your local area.It sounds basic, but if youre not involved with your local community and using local resources to find job seekers, youre making a huge mistake, Means says.Translation make sure youre sp reading the word about your business and letting people know youre hiring seasonal employees. Tap your local networks, including the Chamber of Commerce, religious groups and other community organizations. Consider advertising at local events where workers (or their families) are likely to gather. Be sure to highlight your employer brand story. Be sure to talk about the benefits that your company offers, such as flexible hours, free food, bonuses, etc.Leverage the reach of social mediaThe recruiting game for seasonal jobs is different today than it was 5 years ago, says Means. The biggest game changer? Social media.Today, social platforms like Facebook and Twitter play a key role in circulatingjobs ads. In fact, 46% of recruiters say social media is their primary source for finding job candidates, according to Social Talents 2017 Global Recruiting Survey. With some added technology, social media gives you the means totarget local talent.A goodsocial media strategytargets prospective hireswhere they congregate online. Useyour social outreach as anopportunity to communicate why your company culture makes your businessa great place to work for the season. Stand out by including a sneak-peek into your company culture using fun photos and videos.Encourage employees to make referralsTechnology can help you find local talent as never before. Yet old-school employee referrals remain a viable way to find holiday workers. To sweeten the deal, offer your workers a financial bonus for referrals that lead to hires. Make sure to organize these leads into atalent pipelinefor future hiring needs.Cant afford to reward employees with money? You can offer workers the ability to telecommute after the holidays, when the craziness of the season has died down, Challenger says. In fact flexible scheduling is a benefit that appeals to workers during the holiday season. Improve your companywebsites SEOWhats the point in posting seasonal job openings on your website if job seekers cant f ind it? Youll want to point directly to your job openings from your website.Increasing your sitessearch engine optimization (SEO)i.e., where your website shows up on search engine resultsis a goal for every small business owner.Your websites SEO depends onthe right keywords and hyperlinks. To select these, Means recommends small businesses hire a local marketing firm that really knows the tricks of the trade. Be prepared to make an upfront investmentSEO consultants charge an average hourly rate of $171, according to Credo, a tafelgeschirr that connects small businesses and SEO providers.zum besten von tip make sure your website is also optimized for mobile. A Pew Research Center survey found that 28% of Americans have used a smartphone during a job search.Consider offering higher wagesWith such stiff competition for holiday workers, Challenger says small businesses may need to offer higher wages to lure talent. Offering the same hourly wage that you paid last year might not cut it, he says. Its a trend that the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) has steadily tracked. Their July Small Business Jobs Report shows a net 32 percent of higher worker compensation.Small business owners are continuing to show that theyre looking to hire and willing to pay more to hire the right employees, said NFIB Chief Economist Bill Dunkelberg. How can you respond? Compare your wages with what competitors are offering and up the ante if you have room in the budget, Challenger says.Hire remote workers (when possible)Look at your holiday jobscan any of them be handled by remote workers? Doing so can help increase your talent pool dramatically. Online customer service employees could be located anywhere, Challenger says. Theres a lot of good talent in rural areas, he adds.If you go this route, youll want to be thorough about checking references. Unlike a normal workforce you will not be able to lay eyes onthem all day and know what theyre doing, says Frank Dadah, a managi ng director for recruiting firm WinterWyman, Waltham, Massachusetts. With these recommendations in hand, youre ready to rally your recruiting efforts and make the most of the 2018 holiday season. 8 Reasons Why Your Employee Referral Program Is Failing
8 Reasons Why Your Employee Referral Program Is Failing 8 Reasons Why Your Employee Referral Program Is Failing Employee referrals are easily one of the most efficient and cost-effective ways of attracting talent to organizations. You can count on new hires referred by current employees to be fully immersed within your company culture in a matter of weeks. But sometimes employee referral programs dont bring desired effects and result in few, if any, quality hires. Here are some key reasons why your employee referral program might be failing and some tips to help you fix it: 1. No Information Flow About Open Positions As a recruiter, you clearly know what positions are open at the company. But if you never communicate these open positions to employees, how do you expect them to bring in quality candidates? Consequently, few employees participate in the referral program, and it slowly become irrelevant as a source of great candidates. You can use automatic tools to keep the communication flow open between you and your employees, or simply send weekly or monthly emails in which you list all open positions. 2. You Fail to Keep Candidates in the Loop Organizations often fail to engage with a candidate for weeks after interviewing them. Naturally, job seekers grow frustrated and turn back to the employees who referred them in the first place. Its your job to keep both candidates and employees in the loop about the recruitment process. It is also important to group referred candidates separately from candidates sourced by other means. This will allow you to stay informed about who referred whom â" and whether or not your employee referral program is actually resulting in great hires. 3. You Never Change Referral Rewards If you stick to the same referral rewards for a long time, youre effectively failing to excite employees about the opportunity to refer their friends. Naturally, as employees lose motivation to participate, you lose out on quality hires through their referrals. Shake things up from time to time to keep employees engaged in your referral program. 4. You Use an Ineffective ATS Applicant tracking systems (ATS) are great for sorting through many candidate profiles and matching them to keywords in job descriptions. But by reducing candidates to mere keywords, youre losing out on their industry insights, drive to innovate, and/or learning capabilities. When hiring through employee referrals, avoid running these resumes through the ATS, but keep another channel open to grant them priority in the recruiting process. 5. You Fail to Respond to Referrals in a Timely Fashion When and how you respond to employee referrals has a huge impact on your employee referral program. Many recruiters make the mistake of failing to respond personally to every referral that comes their way. A lack of a response â" or a response that comes too late â" can damage the performance of your employee referral program. Respond to each referral in a timely manner, and youll show employees that their referrals are treated seriously and are worth the effort. 6. You Never Set Expectations for Your Program Launching a referral program without a clear objective is pointless. Determine what such a program can accomplish and set clear expectations for recruiters and employees alike. Keep communicating these expectations throughout the duration of the program and youll never find yourself breaking your promises. 7. Your Site Isnt Mobile-Optimized A referral website that isnt optimized for mobile is a serious mistake. It will limit the number of referrals arriving at your doorstep because employees do more work through mobile devices rather than their computers. Optimize your website for mobile, and youll be offering a great experience for employees willing to refer a quality hire on the go. 8. You Exclude Some Employees From the Program Excluding certain employees from the program â" e.g., senior managers or HR professionals â" is another bad idea. Your motive might be transparency and fairness of the process, but by excluding these people from the program, youll affect employee motivation. These figures should lead by example, and their participation in the program matters. If they dont participate, why should other employees? â" If you dont want to lose a considerable number of quality hires, address these problems with your employee referral program. Youll be on your way to making the most of your current employees and the talent pools they bring with themselves.

Job Interview Questions About Your Best and Worst Bosses
Job Interview Questions About Your Best and Worst Bosses Job Interview Questions About Your Best and Worst Bosses How should you answer interview questions about your past managers? Depending on the supervisors youve had, some of these questions can be tricky to answer. Its important to keep it as positive as you can, even when you worked in a negative environment. With the question Who was your best boss and who was the worst? the interviewer is trying to discover if you are the type of candidate to assess blame or carry a grudge. Employers look for staff who are coachable, responsive to management directives and who take responsibility for their own productivity. They also want to determine whether you are a match for the culture of the company. Even if you had a boss who was awful, dont come right out and say so. Interviewers dont want to hear negativity, and they will wonder what you will ultimately say about their organization if you are hired and it doesnt work out. Focus your answers on how you were able to work productively despite management challenges. As with any interview response, take the opportunity to integrate critical assets for your target job with your responses. For example, if a job requires advanced client prospecting skills and a boss taught you some valuable approaches, you might reference that boss as one of your best for that reason. Examples of the Best Answers Review the following sample interview answers to find out the best way to respond. Solid sample answers: Ive learned from each boss Ive had. From the good ones; what to do, from the challenging ones; what not to do.Early in my career, I had a mentor who helped me a great deal, and we still stay in touch. Ive honestly learned something from each boss Ive had.My best boss was a manager who enabled me to take on more responsibility as I progressed in my job. Ive had other bosses with a more a hands-off management style, but I appreciated the interaction with the first manager I mentioned. My best boss was a woman who showed me the importance of suggestive selling. She was able to show a customer the perfect accessories to go with an outfit, without being pushy, and taught me to increase my selling abilities tremendously. I learned a lot about organization from my last boss. Ive always been an organized person, but I learned from him new ways to organize and mobilize the staff, which was very valuable to improving my management abilities. My best boss was one who was able to recognize the strengths in his employees and to apply them to their fullest extent. He taught me to look at people more individually and to understand that almost everyone has something positive to offer. My best boss was a person who set such a wonderful example for her employees that she inspired people to work harder. She was always up, even when she wasnt, and never let a customer leave unhappy. She would always have the right thing to say to provide encouragement to her customers and employees alike. My worst boss was a man who provided very little feedback about my performance. I was able to improve communication by providing unsolicited weekly status reports on my projects. Eventually, he furnished some feedback and constructive criticism to these reports and I knew better where I stood. My best boss was a woman who taught me more about how to use analytics to frame my business development strategies for clients in my territory. My favorite boss was a very dynamic speaker. She took me under her wing, taught me how to command a room and helped me to become a very effective presenter. Prepare for Similar Questions Also be prepared to answer similar questions about the jobs youve held. The interviewer may ask you which position was your favorite, and which was your least favorite, and why. When you discuss your favorite job, be sure to reference parts of the job requirements that are a match for the job for which youre interviewing. When you talk about your least favorite position, dont mention one thats similar to the job youre hoping to get hired for.

Does impression management make you less authentic
Does impression management make you less authentic Does impression management make you less authentic Do you spell-check a report before turning it into your boss? Do you watch your table manners when dining with an important client?Do you âdress for successâ (whatever that means in your industry) when making a presentation to the executive team?If so, you are not being âphony,â you are simply aligning the impression you want to make with a positive version of yourself. Which is how I explain the concept of impression management to the executives and managers I coach. Most of my clients realize that it isnât any less authentic to be seen at their best than it is to display their worst (or sloppiest) behaviors.A problem only arises when a client confuses habit with authenticity â" especially around body language. For example: A leader may be slouching because he has always had poor posture, but that doesnât make it authentic (âThatâs just how I standâ), it simply makes it a habit â" and, by the way, not a habit that serves him well.As a leader, your posture affects how people perceive you. Just as someone with good posture sends nonverbal signals of energy, confidence, and health, a person with poor body posture appears uninterested or unmotivated â" which I assume is not the impression any of us wants to project to our bosses, customers, and colleagues. And thatâs not the only nonverbal signal that can block people from seeing the real you. Hereâs what happened to Tracy:A few years ago, Tracy participated in a 360-degree trust audit. When the results of the review came back, she was surprised to see that she had received low scores in the area of transparency. When she asked for an explanation, Tracy was even more surprised to be told that she sometimes gave the impression of having a hidden agenda.Because Tracy didnât have any hidden agendas at work, it bothered her to think that co-workers could believe she was being deliberately secretive. When her boss suggested she should try declaring her intent in greater detail before laying ou t new ideas or plans, she worked on doing this for the next several months. But when the next trust audit scores were compiled a year later, they were exactly the same, once again noting her lack of transparency. Then she heard me speak at a conference and wondered if her body language was part of the problem. As Tracy later told me, âMy normal, core temperature is lower than most peopleâs. Iâm someone who is chronically cold and in response, I have a habit of sitting in meetings with my arms crossed for warmth. I started wondering if it was this nonverbal signal of âclosedâ that was at odds with my genuine openness.âTo test her theory, for the next several months Tracy made a point of wearing more layers of clothing and of opening her arms and gesturing more generously when speaking. It was a great relief when her next trust scores rose to reflect the honest and transparent person she really was.Recently, I was asked to coach a gentle and shy group leader who was consist ently passed over for promotion because, to members of the executive team, he didnât appear shy, but rather, uncertain and insecure. Much of that erroneous impression was due to the fact that this brilliant man didnât make positive eye contact when interacting with the executives. While his shyness was valid, his habitual lack of eye contact was behavior that didnât authentically reflect his true intellect and senior leadership potential. We are poor judges of the impression we make on others. In fact, when we see ourselves on video for the first time, it is often a humbling experience. I remember when a client watched the âpracticeâ job interview I video-taped of him. He took one look and said, âHell, I wouldnât hire me!âThe concept of a growth mindset was developed by psychologist Carol Dweck and popularized in her book, Mindset: The New Psychology of Success. A mindset is a perception people have about themselves. If, for instance, you believe that your poor postu re, lack of eye contact, etc. is âjust the way you are,â you may hold a closed mindset. If, on the other hand, you believe that you can practice a chosen behavior until it becomes your new habit, you probably hold a growth mindset.Recent advances in neuroscience are fully in the growth mindset camp, finding that the brain is far more malleable than we ever knew. Neuroplasticity is the term used to describe how connectivity between neurons can change, strengthen, and grow with experience and practice.Authenticity is reflective of this process. Itâs capable of continually evolving. As you practice and adopt the verbal and nonverbal traits that positively influence peopleâs impression of you, you are also in the process of transforming your authentic self.Carol Kinsey Goman, Ph.D., is an international keynote speaker and leadership presence coach. Sheâs the author of âThe Silent Language of Leaders: How Body Language Can Help â" or Hurt How You Leadâ and creator of Linke dInLearningâs video series: âBody Language for Leaders.â For more information, visit CarolKinseyGoman.com.

Designer Clears Security to Land Defense Job in DC
Designer Clears Security to Land Defense Job in DC Designer Clears Security to Land Defense Job in DC A Washingtonian looks for a new job in Washington, DCâs defense industry.Carolyn Stinnette knew her job as a senior instructional designer for a major corporation in the Washington, D.C., area was winding down. The challenges that had attracted her to the position a few years ago did not exist anymore; the clients she had been working with - many of them connected to the federal government and defense industry - were becoming scarcer; and she knew it was time to move on.But emotionally, she said, it was hard to make the break. She started with baby steps, looking first within her company a little more than a year ago. That process picked up speed in June 2008, when it became clear that a layoff was imminent.âI really loved my company, and I wanted to stay with them,â Stinnette said. âBut what I found was the jobs within the company required that I would have had to move, travel 75 percent of the time or go overseas to high-risk areas, and none of that sounded desirable.â But neither did leaving her company. The company now had her on overhead - that is, not attached to a paying project - so she let her job search lag while she continued with internal projects. She did use this time to network, looking for short-term projects with managers with whom she thought might have upcoming permanent projects, or a wider view of the company for her networking. But Carolyn was devoting 60 percent to 80 percent of her time on the internal projects, and she knew the timeframe for being on overhead is generally a short one - much shorter than the time sheâd already expended.Looking outside By late August, Carolyn found it difficult not to spend time worrying about the situation. She talked to her manager. He agreed that her situation was precarious and asked her to shelve the internal projects and concentrate on the job hunt, explaining that while on overhead the clock was ticking to find a new position, and she could use the office during her job search.âIt just struck me walking down the hall one day: âItâs time to look outside the company, and thatâs OK with me,â â she said. Once Carolyn made that decision, she went into high gear. She signed up on every job board she could find that related to her field. âI hadnât heard of Ladders.com before, but it definitely seemed to be a focused search opportunity in the right direction,â she said.Once sheâd signed up with TechnologyLadder, Carolyn had to refine her tracking methods. She developed a spreadsheet for all her contacts that would prove invaluable for her job search. âI was kind of shocked. Eve n in the economic downturn, there were lots of great opportunities outside my company; just a different pool, I guess. I could barely keep up with responding to recruitersâ inquiries, and I responded to everyone!âShe proceded to land interviews - and offers. And one offer, which came in late November, seemed like the right fit. âI had three offers, and the position I accepted paid $15,000 less than the other two. But I really liked the manager, there was opportunity to advance, and it was still more than I was making at my last job. I went with this one because I thought it would work out the best.âThroughout her job search, Carolyn recalled some advice she once received from an older friend. âThis person told me that when you think you have found the job of your dreams, when it all looks positive, and you have this great energy, rather than going home and celebrating, you should go home and hit the search harder than you had before,â she said. âHe told me itâs wise to keep other âirons in the fireâ by continuing to put out more resumes and contact more recruiters, just in case the job doesnât come through. You wonât waste time getting depressed if it doesnât work out because you are already on to the next opportunity,â she said. That proved a smart move.Maintaining momentum The week before Christmas, just as Stinnette was getting set to leave her previous job to start her new position, the offer was rescinded. There was an issue with the companyâs ability to transfer her clearance from her current job to the new one within the timeframe that the new position required. She found herself out of a job before she even started. However, she had never stopped contacting potential employers. And, she had two things going for her: her detailed spreadsheet of job contacts, and her employment, even though on overhead.âI was very close to the final layoff date - like several others in my department, I had been on overhead for some time and now, I had finally gotten the actual notice. So, I followed up with everyone who had contacted me,â she said. âI told them I was still interested. When they asked me if I was still with my company, I was glad I could honestly say yes, since I hadnât left them for the other job. It definitely looks better if you are sti ll working when you are looking for another job - and, I prayed.âOf one of those interviewing companies, âI thought Iâd found the best,â she said. âEven though my clearance would have gone by the wayside, they had good people, an interesting project, and I liked the management, and the salary offering was back in the higher range. I supposed that I was ready to accept a formal offer,â she said.Carolyn came home from that job interview and went through her notes in her spreadsheet. âAs I went through e-mails and voicemails, checking everything on my spreadsheet, I found one last company that had contacted me,â she said. âI had received a voicemail from them over a week before that had fallen through the cracks. I didnât actually think it was a good possibility, but I decided to return the call simply out of politeness. We spoke on the phone on a Thursday night, then set up an interview for the very next day, again, for interview practice and because Iâve learne d that you never know what youâll find out in the actual interview,â she explained. In fact, it turned out the interview was very exciting and the job was exactly what she was looking for. It offered an opportunity to grow personally and professionally as well as a decent commute; it required her clearance, and it provided a 30 percent increase in salary.Carolynâs new position, with a federal contractor predominately in the defense industry, is much the same type of job that she previously held, âbut it takes everything Iâve enjoyed and in which Iâve done well over the last decade and combines it into one job, with a lot of people contact, which is a primary requirement for me,â she said. The role your instincts play Looking back over this past year, Carolyn said she believes that all the stops and starts in her job search were an important part of the process. âI had so many false starts, opportunities that didnât work out, and opportunities that sounded good but about which I didnât have a good gut feeling,â she said. She explained that it is important to listen to your intuition in times of stress; you donât want to take just any job even when you are concerned about losing the one you have.âIf you have any red flags, then you should trust your instincts and know itâs probably not a good fit,â she said. âYou might be worse off taking that opportunity. When I think back about the fact that I turned down three jobs right before the holidays, and then the job I accepted didnât pan out, I thought to myself, âThereâs a reason you turned down those three jobs.â You donât want to go on for years searching for a job, but you do need to give it time.âBy the time she found her job, Carolyn had come to the end of her overhead. She was able to use her companyâs office facilities and had used her remaining vacation time for pay, but she had no more actual income. She went more than two months without a paycheck between the former job and her first weekâs pay on the job she started in early February. But it was all worth it for her. âIf you get the right fit, youâll excel and progress,â she said. âIf you go with a bad fit, youâll likely have to explain it at your next interview.â

5 Things You Must Not Include on Your Resume
5 Things You Must Not Include on Your Resume 5 Things You Must Not Include on Your Resume 5 Things You Must Not Include on Your Resume If you're unsure of what information to include and what to say goodbye to on your resume, here's what you need to know. [TWEET] Once upon a time, in a far distant land, job recruiters and hiring managers demanded to know all they could about a potential candidate. They expected hobbies, personal identification, photos, age, etc. included on the resume. Thankfully, the resume police saved the day. Now applicants need only include information relevant to the job listing. Resumes should never be longer than two pages. Those empty spaces on the resume are valuable think of it as real estate investments, and information should be carefully selected. Here are a few elements not to include on your resume. Remove those dull, long, bland sentences. Passive sentences take up more room in a resume than any other element. Get rid of the Yoda talk, and replace it with clear, active language. For example, Responsible for controlling inventory for the IT department is a lame sentence. It sounds better, and shorter, if you said Optimized IT department's inventory. Focus on your achievements and what you accomplished, not your job description. Job descriptions are just regurgitated sentences and a waste of everyone's time. Get rid of that weird design. Yes, Word has hundreds of pre-populated resume designs. But those weird looking fill-in-the-blank boxes are clunky and just plain odd. Use simple themes and formats, focusing on section headers, simple fonts, reduced table use, and more bullets. On the other hand, your resume should stand out. Hiring a professional resume writer to look over and edit your resume and cover letter will help prevent redundancies and design flaws. Keep your age a secret. Okay, you're forty, raised three children, and worked as Mr. Rogers' intern. This is good news, just don't tell anyone. Hiring managers want fresh workers with new ideas. It's sad but true. Age can be a disqualifier to landing the job. Corporations sometimes believe older, wiser employees cost more and do less. While this isn't true, younger counterparts take advantage of this. Remove the following to conceal age: Don't list experience older than ten years. Don't include your date of birth or age. Don't draw attention to education, training, certifications, and licensures that occurred more than ten years ago. Please change your email address.
