Want New Ideas In Your Workplace Heres A Four

Want New Ideas in Your Workplace? Here’s a four-point plan “You can have results or you'll be able to have excuses. However, you cannot have both. What’s it gonna be?” ~ Stephen Luke Client Jill Asks: “I just don’t get it. I put in longer hours than anybody in my division. I come to each staff meeting and propose a minimum of one artistic, new initiative. But I’m simply not getting via to anybody. No one notices how onerous I work, and nobody appears particularly excited about my ideas. And I’m certain not getting any face time with C-degree managers. I know I’m missing one thing right here. What is it?” Coach Joel Answers: You’re focusing on the wrong factor. You’re a creative individual, so it’s natural that you would give attention to the creative part of your small businessâ€"coming up with new ideas in your office, creating unique strategies for your firm and your clients. But how are you presenting those? You maintain making an attempt to impress people with how creative you are. What you should do is discuss yo ur ideas when it comes to results. Impress them with your outcomes, not your skills or your work ethic. An article in the Harvard Business Review signifies that 69% of US employers decide their staff’ efficiency by what they accomplish somewhat than the hours on their time log. Many firms are removing the obstacles of labor time and place in order to retain top talent. Employees have the liberty to work when and the way they want, so long as they are attaining their productivity targets. (Galinsky, November, 2012.) So let’s shift your focus from concepts to results. Here’s a 4-point plan I recommend. Be results-pushed. When you present a brand new concept to your boss or your staff, state the concept in just a sentence or two. Then go immediately to outcomes. How much income will your strategy generate? How will it cut back bills or improve shopper providers? Give them particular numbers. Give them a by-when. Tell them who’s going to do what and when it will be accomplished. Nothing can tarnish your shining status more than not finishing the job, even when you need to be glad with less-than-fabulous outcomes. A runner would always rather end the race, even if she comes in final, rather than drop out halfway through. Consistently exceed expectations. If you current an concept and also you get the green light out of your boss or upper management, go the second (and third) mile to do even higher than you stated you'd. For instance, in case your boss would be pleased with an eight% or 9% enhance in client satisfaction numbers, but you realize you possibly can bring it in at 10%, promise 8% and then go for 10%. Under-promise and over-ship. Act like a winner. Believe in your concepts and be confident if you current them. Don’t apologize. Act as if it’s already a accomplished deal. Use confident language. Say “when,” not “if.” Avoid words like “possibly,” “probably,” or “maybe.” When you imagine in yourself, your confidence will increase and also you’ll find that others will start to consider as well. If you change your emphasis from ideas to outcomes, I promise you’ll get a dramatically totally different end result for yourself as nicely. Are your brightest ideas falling on deaf ears? Do you want to be noticed, not overlooked? Joel’s methods have worked for dozens of individuals. Email him for some new ideas today. 4th Key To Success And Fulfillment You Have To Motivate Yourself

Developing the Next Generation of Rainmakers 4th Key to Success and Fulfillment: You Have to Motivate Yourself Before I get started, I have a major announcement. As you know, I started doing legal recruiting with Lateral Link in 2018. Now, Lateral Link has given me the opportunity to bring my client development teaching and coaching to a national audience. Over the next 12 months, I will be presenting live webinar programs each month on client development. The webinars will also be recorded and be available to view and download. I want to make this program as interactive as possible so I invite participants to send me questions on the monthly topic and I will do my best to address those questions during the program. Check out this link to learn more about The Lateral Link Rainmaker Series and sign up. In the last several posts, I have shared my ideas on career success and life fulfillment. As you know, after I gave up my law practice, I worked with hundreds of lawyers in the United States and Canada. Some of those lawyers were motivated and energized. Others were trying to find their motivation. So, I want to focus on motivation in this post and another one later. I have been told I am a motivational speaker. In fact, I was frequently asked to do Bar and Law Firm programs designed to motivate lawyers. Back in 2007,  I was asked to give a presentation to the ABA Young Lawyers Division at their Spring meeting. The ABA YLD came up with ”  Come on Baby Light My Fire â€" How to Reignite Your Flame with the Law.”  The title they chose intrigued me, so I posted a blog about it in January 2007, Listen to Maya Angelou. I began my presentation by showing a short video clip of the Doors singing on the Ed Sullivan show in 1967. You likely don’t know that they got in trouble for not changing the “girl we couldn’t get much higher” lyrics, as they had promised. Then I told the young lawyers: “I have some really good news and some really bad news. The good news is I believe strongly I can light your fire and reignite your flame with the law. The bad news is that unless you are self motivated, the flame I ignited will burn out within a week.” A few years ago I read The Best Damn Sales Book Ever: 16 Rock-Solid Rules for Achieving Sales Success!    by Warren Greshes. The book title doesn’t do the book justice because the principles in the book are broader than sales. Early in the book Greshes talks about motivation. You might hear a speaker that motivates you, but that is external motivation and it does not last. What he said reminded me of a Stephen Covey quote: “Motivation is a fire from within. If someone else tries to light that fire under you, chances are it will burn very briefly.” If you find your inner motivation, it will burn forever. I doubt you will find it by getting your billable hours, getting promoted or making a lot of money. If that is your focus, there will always be someone who gets more hours, gets promoted sooner and  makes more money. So, what is the best way for you to find your inner motivation? Focus on the journey, not the destination. Do not compare how you are doing with others, Think about how the work you are doing is helping your clients. Finally, work each and every day to become a better lawyer. I will share some more specific motivation ideas with you in a future post. I practiced law for 37 years developing a national construction law practice representing some of the top highway and transportation construction contractors in the US.

Finance and Career Tips from Someone Whos Been There

Account and Career Tips from Someone Whos Been There My name is Shannon and I'm another supporter of Ms. Profession Girl. I began composing my first post about a money related agenda for youthful experts however then I understood something. For what reason would it be advisable for you to take my recommendation on the off chance that you don't have the foggiest idea who I am? So today I'm pausing for a moment to present myself so you can comprehend why I'm expounding on close to home money and profession tips. (Also, not to stress, the monetary agenda for youthful experts is just around the corner!) To begin, I'll reveal to you somewhat increasingly about what I'm doing now. I'm the Community Outreach and Customer Support Manager at ReadyForZero, a great San Francisco startup that engages individuals to escape obligation quicker, all alone. While a lot of my days are spent ensuring we're helping our clients inside and out we can, I additionally get the opportunity to do a great deal of composing for our blog. I can sincerely say I'm more joyful than I've at any point been in my vocation and at 29 years of age it was a lengthy, difficult experience getting to this point. My First Career Goal Ive needed to be an author since the time I was a little child. At the point when I was youthful I could generally be found with my nose in a book and three increasingly close to me. I was so persuaded I'd be an author some time or another that I named my pooch Murphy Brown, who I viewed as my motivation. That's right, that Murphy Brown. Its entertaining now, yet when I was a child she was one intense treat in the news-casting world (anecdotal as it might have been). Normally, I studied news-casting in school yet immediately acknowledged I didn't care for it as much as I suspected I would have. Against my better judgment (the part that truly would have liked to get paid to compose sometime in the future), I changed my major to English writing. I fell so enamored with my classes that I didn't mind how troublesome it may be to get a new line of work later. I managed to land a couple of temporary positions and work on some truly energizing projectsbut I was still in for a severe shock u pon graduation. Post-Graduation Job Search No place in my Ohio city was there space for unpracticed scholars. With various huge colleges around there were more reporting and English majors looking for work than there were employment opportunities. It killed my confidence at that point, however thinking back it's no big surprise that I was unable to get a new line of work in my field. I wound up accepting a vocation as a bank employee to make sure I could escape my school waitressing work. The compensation was horrible however I figured it was in any event an opportunity to get a type of a lifelong going. Basically, I took the path of least resistance and abandoned my fantasies. I was persuaded that I'd remain just long enough to set aside up enough cash to achieve my other dream moving to New York. I thought I expected to have more work understanding to find a new line of work in New York and that I would need to remain in Ohio up to that point. Kid, was I wrong. Moving to the Big City A couple of years after the fact, I at long last chose to simply dive in. I was involved with somebody who found a new line of work in New York and needed me to come however I would not like to move for an additional a half year. I had just intended to go toward the beginning of the following year and was frightened to change that arrangement. Fortunately, I was persuaded to go early. The relationship didn't last (which I expected) yet it was the correct move to make. I moved to New York, found an occupation in under two weeksand on the primary day of my new position the economy as we was already aware it failed. I was fortunate. My activity was at a steady organization which was influenced by the accident, however less that they needed to release me. Had I adhered to my unique arrangement, who knows whether there would have been a vocation for me in New York. Who knows whether I even would have had the guts to move in a down economy. I remained with that organization for 3 ½ years. I despite everything wasn't getting paid to compose, however being in New York gave me the kick I expected to cause the composition to occur outside of work. I despite everything recollect the day I met a's companion who was an abstract specialist. I approached him for counsel on the best way to complete a book and he stated, Simply compose, kid. Compose for 15 minutes consistently. Regardless of whether it sucks. Do what needs to be done. What's more, I did. Presently I have one book total and another book half complete that I will convey for entries when it's done. By doing this, I achieved probably the best dream. Yet at the same time, something wasn't right. As incredible as my activity might have been, I needed to accomplish something that offered back to the world and, in a perfect world, permitted me to compose. At long last, It All Comes Together Enter my next enormous experience. My sweetheart (presently life partner) and I started looking at moving to San Francisco. I was on edge to take a stab at living elsewhere since I had just moved once and he was down for checking out it. We set aside up some cash, gave our notification at work, and made the crosscountry trek. All I had as a vocation was a momentary agreement with a youthful startup, however I assumed if I could do this once, for what reason wouldn't I be able to do it once more? On the off chance that you go where there is opportunity and apply like insane, chances are you can get a new line of work. I'd just committed an error by standing by so long in Ohio so I surely wasn't going to do that once more. Indeed, it wasn't exactly as fast and simple as getting a new line of work in New York seemed to be, yet it turned out to be far and away superior to I'd trusted. The entire week-lengthy drive across nation I continued saying I wanted that ReadyForZero was recruiting. I'd been acquainted with them by my life partner a year back and began composing individual account articles for them on an independent premise. I definitely realized I adored their strategic that they were an incredible group to work with. Lo and see a month subsequent to moving my agreement was fulfilled, I was searching for work, and they were searching for an understudy. Is it accurate to say that i was reluctant to take an entry level position? Definitely! At my age and level of experience I needed a pay, benefits, and the information that my activity was a slam dunk. Be that as it may, the open door was too acceptable to even consider passing up. They were happy to instruct me about internet based life and computerized showcasing while as yet letting me compose for their blog in the event that I additionally took on client support. After seven months, my temporary position transformed into an all day employment and now I truly have the activity I had always wanted! Indeed, it was a long, hard street. In any case, it has been so justified, despite all the trouble to get to this point. What's the purpose of me disclosing to all of you this? So I can impart to you the things I took in the most difficult way possible. So you don't need to commit the errors that I made. (Or then again so you can commit errors just to gain from them, however in any event comprehend what's in store.) Because time, preliminary, and mistake have instructed me that when you have a fantasy you need to simply let it all out. The way to accomplishment may not be a straight line or a short one. Be that as it may, as long as you watch out for the value and take the necessary steps to get it going (counting venturing out from home, taking a lower paying employment to pick up understanding, etc) at that point you will see your fantasies happen as expected. 5 Ways To Encourage Your Team Toward Yes You Can

Book Karin & David Today 5 Ways to Encourage Your Team Toward “Yes You Can” 28 eyes looked at me skeptically. They had been satisfied the task I had outlined for his or her technique session was beyond their reach. “Just too exhausting,” they defined. “I’m not that creative,” stated another. No time for second guessing. Sure this train had labored in other contexts, but I had by no means worked in this industry earlier than. What in the event that they have been proper? “Shut up,” I told my inside voice, rudely. Sometimes you’ve simply got to be direct with that sucker or he’ll get the most effective of you. On the surface, I was equally direct, however kinder. “Of course you are able to do this! I’ve never seen this method fail (true statement). You’ve completely obtained this. Now let’s talk about where you’re caught.” Still skeptical, a couple of pairs of eyes softened. I might see the beam of chance shining via. I knew I needed to diffuse the scene, 14 doubters towards one was an excessive amount of. “When I get caught lik e this, I often find it helpful to take a walk,” I provided. “If anybody desires to take a lap round this stunning hotel to suppose, that’s simply nice. If you’re able to bounce your concepts off another person it may be helpful to speak it through with your colleague. And, I’m going to be over here and would love to talk by way of this with anybody one-0n-one.” A few took a stroll. Others paired up. I held a couple of consultations, where we explored what they have been most afraid of. When we regrouped, they nailed it. Not just in a hammer and nail sort of method. They nailed it with all of the impact of an electric nail gun. In reality, that session was one of the most powerful I’ve ever seen. Be confident within the mission. Be assured in the team. Be confident in the energy of discomfort. Don’t articulate your personal self-doubtâ€" that’s not humble, it’s damaging. It’s simpler to stay stuck if you’re surrounded by stuckness. Chances are everyone’s no t caught in the same place or for a similar reasons. Find a method to separate the naysayers. Ask your group member to recall a time they’ve been profitable in an analogous state of affairs. Start from a assured place. “I’m sure you’ve accomplished well in similar conditions in the past. Can you inform me a few time… what did you do… what made it profitable?” Be obtainable. Ask provocative questions that cause them to success. “What’s the worst factor that might occur right here?” I requested one woman. “I might get emotional,” she confided. “Okay that’s comprehensible,” I mentioned matter-of-factly, and continued. “Emotional in a bit verklempt sort of choking up or a full on wailing and gnashing of enamel?” She laughed, “Nah, it’ received’t be that dangerous.” “We can deal with that…” She shared her story with the team. She wasn’t the one who cried. Message obtained. Teams want encouragement to take little risks that feel big. Networking Pays Off in a Big Way

Networking Pays Off in a Big Way I am consistently asked how I “get” new clients. For example, how have I had the opportunity to speak at local chambers of commerce events? How do I get new resume clients? And, how do I find businesses that need marketing, public relations, and writing assistance? The answer is simple: networking. First, starting a writing and speaking business can be an interesting endeavor. How do you get your name out there? How do you let people know that you are available for marketing and writing opportunities? And, probably most interesting of all, how do potential clients know that you are actually a good writer/marketer/public relations person? I started my business my writing articles and other small marketing pieces for local non-profit organizations. Obviously, these were volunteer assignments and I did not get paid. What did I get? I was able to secure numerous individuals that understood my diligent work ethic, timeliness when completing job assignments, and writing skills. These people were worth more to me than the monetary value I would have received if these jobs were paid. However, this networking started my business and continues it today. My business is a member of two local chambers of commerce. Most networking events through these organizations are free or only cost a minimal fee. If your business is a member of these organizations, take advantage of the opportunities they offer. Attend luncheons, networking events, and business expos. Don’t be afraid to invite other chamber of commerce members to lunch or to your business. Reaching out to these individuals starts to build your “web” of business contacts. Once you meet enough people, your “web” starts to expand itself. Feather Communications will start its fifth year of business on January 1, 2012. While I have only advertised in a few publications, most of my business has developed from networking. In fact, this upcoming week includes meetings with three potential new clients that I have met through networking, meetings, and organizations. The best tip I can offer for networking is this: do it. You can’t talk about it, read about it, and expect it to happen. You have to actually go to the meeting, attend the after-hours event, and start meeting people. But, once you start to network with business professionals, you will be amazed by the results. Trust me â€" it has built my business for the past four years and I know it will continue to do so well into the future.

What to Do When an Employee Says Meh to Their Raise

What to Do When an Employee Says Meh to Their Raise What to Do When an Employee Says Meh to Their Raise What to Do When an Employee Says Meh to Their Raise Rossheim In this season of low joblessness, its hard to know whether the remuneration youre offering is adequate to draw in the ability your organization needsand keep them set up. While the inquiry appears to be clear, it warrants nearer investigation. Indeed, even as we close to full work and with nine back to back long stretches of monetary extension, the normal increase in salary is anticipated to top out at around 3 percent in 2018, as indicated by the WorldatWork 2017-2018 Salary Budget Survey. Tight pay financial plans are making ability challenges, says Elizabeth Bernaiche, remuneration practice pioneer at Insight Performance. Enrollment specialists are making some intense memories. Simultaneously, bosses are relying upon a blend of restricted compensation increments and complete awards to hold sought after specialists. The inquiry is, will direct wage increments win, or will ability begin heading for greener fields in more prominent numbers? Furthermore, how might you keep your crowd on the ranch? We solicited a range from specialists to say something regarding the regularly frustrating nature ofcompensation dynamicsand got back some top perceptions and exhortation on pay tacticsto help you out. Present the defense that a 3 percent raise is the thing that you can offer. What isolates organizations with significant representative maintenance issues from those that keep most workers happy with average raises? Genuineness, adaptability and straightforwardness of the budgetary kind. A few representatives have come to comprehend that a level 3 percent is what is being offered, says Jodi Chavez, leader of Randstad Professionals. Representatives are remaining with their managers for adaptable plans like telecommuting and for shorter drives. Dont attempt to control your pay costs. Despite the fact that it might be important to keep pay increments in the moderate range, your organization will get singed in the ability advertise on the off chance that you really decrease raises now. Managers should be careful this isn't an ideal opportunity to trim remuneration financial plans, says Chavez. Use rewards as opposed to base-increases in salary at whatever point you can. Be liberal with rewards even as you hold down perpetual compensation increments. Rewards are on the ascent, says Tim Low, senior vicepresident atPayScale. Businesses may decide to compensate representatives with a reward as opposed to a raise, since rewards dont compound after some time and offer greater adaptability. Realize that a greater amount of your rivals are paying maintenance rewards. Regardless of how obliged your spending plan, assemble knowledge on your adversaries and how they are dispersing remuneration across pay types. Maintenance rewards rose from 16 percent of businesses studied in 2015 to 22 percent in 2016. Top-performing organizations will in general compensation rewards more habitually than common organizations. Pay pressure ought to be a developing worry in 2018. One more pay stress is strengthening: pay pressure particularly where it makes strain between recently recruited employees who were lured with serious offers and officeholder workers who feel like theyre falling behind monetarily. We have a great deal of little to medium size customers with pay pressure issues in light of the fact that theyre not offering greater builds, says Bernaiche. In any case, be cautious about expanding pay disparity in your workforce. Wages are expanding a lot quicker at more generously compensated occupations, says Dow Scott, a teacher of HR in the Quinlan School of Business at Loyola University Chicago. Worsening contrasts among haves and the poor inside your association can be a culture executioner. Look for counsel in applying pay value and compensation request laws. A compensation value law in Massachusetts that produces results in 2018 will constrain organizations to consider up-and-comers experience when defining bids for employment. Businesses should give 4 percent to 6 percent increments to superior workers and less to other people, Bernaiche says. On the off chance that need be, look for outside exhortation on consistence with material laws and guidelines. Flex is bowing under the weight of rising work request. For sought after experts, that old melody is back: Show me the cash. Non-money related advantages, for example, adaptable work routines are down 5 percent year-over-year for money, says Low. Influence adaptable work choices any place you can, yet realize that there are limits. Complete remuneration explanations can convince a few representatives. All out remuneration articulations (or absolute prizes proclamations) can help support probably a portion of your laborers commitment. The more seasoned age acknowledges it; more youthful representatives dont think past base compensation, says Bernaiche. Perhaps they dont comprehend complete prizes. However, on the off chance that an all out remunerations proclamation is clear, workers will welcome the bundle you offer. Your prizes explanation ought to completely clarify every class of pay and all business commitments per classification. A lunch meeting with a present will be more powerful than a messaged PDF that is not entirely obvious. After all the numbers, comp is about individuals. Workers are attempting to cut out a real existence, says Scott. Organizations have a ton of influence, so theyre ready to do things representatives dont like. In any case, insightful managers are remembering that on the off chance that they neglect to offer remuneration that is seen as reasonable, workers may utilize the main influence they have: looking somewhere else.

Social Media Never on Sunday - Executive Career Brandâ„¢

Online life Never on Sunday At the point when I as of late visited my elderly, ultra tech-tested dad (he despite everything experiences difficulty with his replying mail â€" disregard him ever getting a PC), I brought along my netbook to check whether I'd have the option to get a sign at his home. He wondered about how little my PC was. Is that a full PC? he inquired. I disclosed to him it was. We spoke somewhat about how far weve accompany the Internet and innovation. He shook his head and asked, Is the Internet open 24 hours per day? Obviously, I addressed yes. I think he was amenably prodding me to set the thing aside while we were visiting. However, did that little question of his at any point hit the nail on the head with me. Indeed, the Internet never closes, yet I surely don't need to exploit its relentless accessibility to such an extent. I didn't expect to browse messages or Twitter or anything while I was visiting (how impolite would that be!), however I was trusting I could show him my web journals, since he'd seen nothing I've done on the web. Legit! That is all I would do. Plus, I couldnt get a sign in any case. In any case, you know how it is. These compact gadgets make it so natural to joyfully remain associated . . . unendingly. My companion Tim Tyrell-Smith put it so well in his post, Your Computer isn't Your Friend: Every so often your PC feels like an extraordinary companion. Accomplishing such work for you. Murmuring along. Staying with you on those long days during quest for new employment. Be that as it may, it's not the incredible companion you think it is. It is devious. It can annihilate your core interest. Lock you down in a bogus condition of apparent efficiency. You can go through hours every day burning through your time. Jeff Atwood had this to state in his post, Email: The Variable Reinforcement Machine: Proceed, pull the 'new email switch. Take a risk. More often than not youll end up a washout, the pleased beneficiary of one more spam email, a public statement you dont care about, or some unessential discussion somebody has cc:ed you into. In any case, not generally. There are those uncommon hardly any occasions when youll hit the big stake: youll get a significant piece of data you required, or conditional contact from a tragically deceased companion or partner, or other uplifting news. Were so delighted to understand that solitary valuable email out of hundreds that we cannot keep ourselves from urgently squeezing the new email switch again and again and over, trusting it will happen again soon. While trying to break my semi-dependence, I set an objective half a month prior. NO SOCIAL MEDIA OR COMPUTERS AT ALL ON SUNDAYS!!! That is to say, is it extremely important to browse messages on Sunday, when I realize I won't react until Monday . . . or stay aware of person to person communication, when nothing occurring there will be so basic I need to manage it on Sunday. Isn't it increasingly imperative to rest my eyes and move contemplations from business at any rate one day seven days? Up until now, I was fruitful in meeting my objective on one Sunday out of the previous three. What's more, it was superb to disengage for that one entire day. How about we see what happens this Sunday. 00 0

Different Ways to Deal with Bad Credit

Different Ways to Deal with Bad Credit Having bad credit is something that can affect a lot of us in different ways. It might be that you’re looking for a new car or you want to try and get a mortgage for a home, only for you to be turned down because of your credit history. Equally, it might be that you face increased premiums on insurance policies, or you face difficult questions when you need to have a credit check carried out. Whatever the circumstances, having bad credit isn’t the end of the world, it’s something that can be managed with the right guidance. There’s several approaches you can take to lessen the burdens of bad credit, or rid yourself of it altogether. Here’s a few examples for you to consider: Get yourself organised First and foremost, you’ll want to make sure that your information is all up to date and that you’re well aware of what debts and other issues are affecting your credit. Then, work out what exactly your current incomings are versus your outgoings. Along with being useful information, this also demonstrates your willingness to improve your current circumstances. Speak to your bank about getting a credit card A big part of improving your credit is showing you can pay back the money you owe and a great way to prove this is by getting a credit card and paying it off each month. One thing you shouldn’t do here though is just apply for every credit card you can, as these will require credit checks which will negatively affect your score. Instead, talk to the bank you have a current account with as they will know you and your current financial situation. Change your current payment plans If you can’t get a credit card, another option is to try and change the repayment plans on any debts you’re currently paying off to something more manageable based on your incomings. Consolidate your debts You also have the option to take out a bad credit loan from a specialist provider like Everyday Loans and consolidate your debts into one repayment scheme. This will be easier to manage and can help you keep track of your finances much easier. A final aspect to remember is that there’s no quick fix for bad credit, it will take time and perseverance to overcome your situation. With the right attitude and some of the above in place though, you should put yourself back on the right path to having a good credit score. So be sure to give these ways a try and rid yourself of your bad credit worries. Image Source; Image Source; Image Source

Dealing With Potentially Criminal Sexist Behavior In the Workplace

Dealing With Potentially Criminal Sexist Behavior In the Workplace For as much progress as has been made with women achieving equality in the worldwide workforce, there is still much to do. And women in the business world, in particular, have to pay attention very carefully to potentially criminal sexist behavior that they encounter. The more times this behavior is reported, the sooner employers will create a better quality workplace across the gender spectrum. Women have to know when to call a lawyer, how to find resources about discrimination, techniques for establishing workplace rules, and methods for collecting evidence if there is a situation where sexist behavior in the workplace is occurring. The more calmly and rationally all of these circumstances and conditions are approached, the more efficient the resolution will be. Knowing a Lawyer To Call  Especially when handling sex crimes, women have to know when to call a lawyer. If theres a danger or a potentially catastrophic occurrence that has happened or will happen, contacting the legal firm immediately is the best course of action. Employers, managers, and company owners also should be made aware of circumstances, but the bottom line is that a legal team will help in almost all instances. Resources About Discrimination  There are lots of available resources about workplace discrimination available online. If youre looking for gender discrimination, in particular, there are probably hundreds of thousands of top quality information sites that are available, many of which link to other sources of relevant information. Researching an important topic like criminal sexist behavior should be one of the first things that women do when they enter the workforce. Establishing Workplace Rules  For a woman, the workplace can have a different overall feel than it does for a man. Because there are such strong generational traditions and habits that have gone down through the decades, establishing workplace rules is more important than ever for women. Lines have to be drawn. Bad behaviors need to be cut off at the root. The more assertive that women are early in their careers, the better patterns they will establish with the people around them. Sexist routines are not acceptable, but they are prevalent, and the faster they get dealt with, the sooner they can be erased. Collecting Evidence  Especially if there is some crime being perpetrated, evidence will have to be collected. As a woman, hang onto things like text messages, emails, photographs, or videos that show illegal things happening. The better evidence you collect, the stronger your case is going to be if it ever comes to a legal apex. The difference between a good conclusion and a bad one can come down entirely to how well different parties are collecting evidence to present their case as being valid. . Image Credit.

Women in Engineering

Women in Engineering Almost everything that we do requires some form of engineering. The cars we drive, the houses we live in, and even the pens we use are possible by some kind of design. With so many opportunities, one is tempted to think that the engineering sector would have both genders in almost equal numbers. However, the situation is different as we make up a small portion of this male-dominated profession. In the UK, only nine percent of engineers are women while in China, 40% of the engineers are women. The interpretation is that more women can find engineering roles  if only we make a few changes to our systems. Image courtesy of Argonne National Lab on Flickr The main reason most of us are not likely to join the engineering workforce is the perception that it is male dominated. Growing up I always wanted to have a profession related to arts, life sciences or medicine because I wanted my life’s work to have positive effects on society at large. As the years went by, I slowly lost hope of achieving this dream. This was not because I could comprehend the design and calculations of the relevant units, but rather because I felt out of place in the related forums. I mean, who would want to be the only female apprentice in an engineering class of thirty. Then there is the fact that there were very few female faculty members to offer support to female students. In the end, I resorted to taking arts instead of aeronautical engineering, a decision that still haunts me today. This leads me to advocate for the leveling of the playing field so that we can see more women in the profession. In the US, women engineering students receive support through conferences, communications, webinars and other various tools from the chapters of the Society of Women Engineers found in every region. I believe that if we had such a structure in the UK more women would be encouraged to join the profession, as it would help in alleviating the feeling that they are in the wrong place. Image courtesy of Wise Campaign on Flickr Network Rail has moved miles towards this direction by planning to encourage females to consider working in the sector while still young. It is the company’s goal to ensure the thinking that the railway is only for men, ceases to exist. The plan is to have 3000 teenagers from five Milton Keynes’ schools go through a program offering career advice on working on railways by 2018. I believe if more organizations carry out such programs, the nation is on a path towards gender equality in engineering.

Top 5 Common Cover Letter Pitfalls to Avoid - Pathfinder Careers

Top 5 Common Cover Letter Pitfalls to Avoid - Pathfinder Careers Top 5 Common Cover Letter Pitfalls to Avoid Some people may argue, legitimately, that many human resource managers and hiring directors barely exact a passing glance at the cover letters that job applicants labor so diligently over. But it never seems to fail that while many qualified candidates have a pretty solid résumé, most don’t deliver on the cover letter. So why are writing these documents so darned difficult? The main reason is that the majority of people are extremely uncomfortable with writing in general, and don’t really understand the exact purpose of a cover letter. Your goal with this document is to interest an employer in you enough to move on to your résumé… you capture their interest, demonstrate an understanding of their unique needs/focus, and then demonstrate how you can solve their problems. I always tell clients that it’s like conducting advertising campaigns… what problem does the target audience have, and how is your product going to fix it? If you shift your thinking to see that you are the product that is going to fix the employer’s problem, then writing a cover letter suddenly becomes much easier. Keep that purpose in mind, and make sure to follow these tips to avoid some of the most common pitfalls of writing cover letters. You’ll have better luck as a result! 1) Understand that this letter  is about THEM, not you. Have you ever been at a cocktail reception, met a new person, and it turns out that all they can talk about is themselves and how awesome they are? Blah, blah, blah, blah! We all tune out when the person we are interacting with shows no interest in us, right? Same goes with the cover letter. CONNECT with the employer â€" build some rapport and show that you UNDERSTAND their company and needs. If you take a moment to understand your audience, suddenly, a cover letter changes into a whole new document for you. It’s a way to sell yourself to solve their problems, not just blab on and on about things that don’t matter to them. And for Pete’s sake, here’s the biggest tip regarding this point: Don’t outline how this job will help you. The employer doesn’t care about you… they only care about their bottom line! 2) Don’t bury your job target. Quickly identify your targeted position for the reader by putting (after the target contact’s address block) one paragraph return down: “RE: (Name of position for which you are applying)” in bold and underline. If the company is recruiting for several positions concurrently, having this readily identifiable note helps the person or program screening the document place you into the correct pile. Additionally, this streamlines the mechanics of your opening line in the cover letter body to seamlessly deliver a compelling ‘hook’ that entices the reader to continue on into the document. 3) Keep your personal brand consistent. Make sure that you use the same contact information block/format for yourself in your cover letter as you do in your résumé. You come across smoother and more polished that way! 4) Be concise â€" no more than one page. No one wants to plow through a two- or three-page cover letter… the longer you make this document, the more you dilute the impact that it has with the employer. Think short, snappy, and attention grabbing. The résumé is the follow up with the facts to back you up. 5) Don’t regurgitate / repeat the résumé. Save the technical or job-associated jargon and details about your accomplishments for the résumé. I use the formula that the RESUME (facts) + the COVER LETTER (compelling reason to hire you) = THE JOB. Keeping these tips in mind will help you write to the intended audience and capture a prospective employer’s interest… instead of boring them to tears!
