Women in Engineering
Women in Engineering Almost everything that we do requires some form of engineering. The cars we drive, the houses we live in, and even the pens we use are possible by some kind of design. With so many opportunities, one is tempted to think that the engineering sector would have both genders in almost equal numbers. However, the situation is different as we make up a small portion of this male-dominated profession. In the UK, only nine percent of engineers are women while in China, 40% of the engineers are women. The interpretation is that more women can find engineering roles if only we make a few changes to our systems. Image courtesy of Argonne National Lab on Flickr The main reason most of us are not likely to join the engineering workforce is the perception that it is male dominated. Growing up I always wanted to have a profession related to arts, life sciences or medicine because I wanted my lifeâs work to have positive effects on society at large. As the years went by, I slowly lost hope of achieving this dream. This was not because I could comprehend the design and calculations of the relevant units, but rather because I felt out of place in the related forums. I mean, who would want to be the only female apprentice in an engineering class of thirty. Then there is the fact that there were very few female faculty members to offer support to female students. In the end, I resorted to taking arts instead of aeronautical engineering, a decision that still haunts me today. This leads me to advocate for the leveling of the playing field so that we can see more women in the profession. In the US, women engineering students receive support through conferences, communications, webinars and other various tools from the chapters of the Society of Women Engineers found in every region. I believe that if we had such a structure in the UK more women would be encouraged to join the profession, as it would help in alleviating the feeling that they are in the wrong place. Image courtesy of Wise Campaign on Flickr Network Rail has moved miles towards this direction by planning to encourage females to consider working in the sector while still young. It is the companyâs goal to ensure the thinking that the railway is only for men, ceases to exist. The plan is to have 3000 teenagers from five Milton Keynesâ schools go through a program offering career advice on working on railways by 2018. I believe if more organizations carry out such programs, the nation is on a path towards gender equality in engineering.

Top 5 Common Cover Letter Pitfalls to Avoid - Pathfinder Careers
Top 5 Common Cover Letter Pitfalls to Avoid - Pathfinder Careers Top 5 Common Cover Letter Pitfalls to Avoid Some people may argue, legitimately, that many human resource managers and hiring directors barely exact a passing glance at the cover letters that job applicants labor so diligently over. But it never seems to fail that while many qualified candidates have a pretty solid résumé, most donât deliver on the cover letter. So why are writing these documents so darned difficult? The main reason is that the majority of people are extremely uncomfortable with writing in general, and donât really understand the exact purpose of a cover letter. Your goal with this document is to interest an employer in you enough to move on to your résumé⦠you capture their interest, demonstrate an understanding of their unique needs/focus, and then demonstrate how you can solve their problems. I always tell clients that itâs like conducting advertising campaigns⦠what problem does the target audience have, and how is your product going to fix it? If you shift your thinking to see that you are the product that is going to fix the employerâs problem, then writing a cover letter suddenly becomes much easier. Keep that purpose in mind, and make sure to follow these tips to avoid some of the most common pitfalls of writing cover letters. Youâll have better luck as a result! 1) Understand that this letter is about THEM, not you. Have you ever been at a cocktail reception, met a new person, and it turns out that all they can talk about is themselves and how awesome they are? Blah, blah, blah, blah! We all tune out when the person we are interacting with shows no interest in us, right? Same goes with the cover letter. CONNECT with the employer â" build some rapport and show that you UNDERSTAND their company and needs. If you take a moment to understand your audience, suddenly, a cover letter changes into a whole new document for you. Itâs a way to sell yourself to solve their problems, not just blab on and on about things that donât matter to them. And for Peteâs sake, hereâs the biggest tip regarding this point: Donât outline how this job will help you. The employer doesnât care about you⦠they only care about their bottom line! 2) Donât bury your job target. Quickly identify your targeted position for the reader by putting (after the target contactâs address block) one paragraph return down: âRE: (Name of position for which you are applying)â in bold and underline. If the company is recruiting for several positions concurrently, having this readily identifiable note helps the person or program screening the document place you into the correct pile. Additionally, this streamlines the mechanics of your opening line in the cover letter body to seamlessly deliver a compelling âhookâ that entices the reader to continue on into the document. 3) Keep your personal brand consistent. Make sure that you use the same contact information block/format for yourself in your cover letter as you do in your résumé. You come across smoother and more polished that way! 4) Be concise â" no more than one page. No one wants to plow through a two- or three-page cover letter⦠the longer you make this document, the more you dilute the impact that it has with the employer. Think short, snappy, and attention grabbing. The résumé is the follow up with the facts to back you up. 5) Donât regurgitate / repeat the résumé. Save the technical or job-associated jargon and details about your accomplishments for the résumé. I use the formula that the RESUME (facts) + the COVER LETTER (compelling reason to hire you) = THE JOB. Keeping these tips in mind will help you write to the intended audience and capture a prospective employerâs interest⦠instead of boring them to tears!

10 Outrageous Lies We Tell Ourselves About Our Jobs To Stick It Out - Work It Daily
10 Outrageous Lies We Tell Ourselves About Our Jobs To Stick It Out - Work It Daily Everyday you go to a job you canât stand, you tell yourself one (or more) of 10 outrageous lies just so you can stick it out. QUIZ: Should You Quit Your Job? This is not a âfeel-goodâ article. Itâs down and dirty and âreal.â As negative and off-putting as this article is intended to be, thereâs a silver lining. Itâs time that you got real with yourself. How long will you continue going to a job that you hate? Believe it or not, thereâs a way out. Thereâs a way to take control of your career and live the life youâve always wanted. It starts with confronting these 10 outrageous lies. 1. âItâs really not that bad.â Maybe itâs not, or maybe youâre just delusional. When was the last time you received a raise or a promotion? When was the last time your boss gave you a pat on the back without following it up with a new set of tasks? 2. âA raise will come in due time.â Unlikely. At best, the average person can only expect to receive an annual raise of between 2.9-4%. Once you include inflation and cost of living increases, youâre not truly getting a raise. Youâre lucky if youâre breaking even. 3. âMy hard work will eventually pay off.â Maybe it will, but maybe it wonât. Has it paid off in the past? If so, how so? What metric are you using to determine that it has paid off? Have you received a raise, a promotion or at least a âjob well doneâ? 4. âIâll eventually get the promotion because I deserve it.â This statement is riddled with entitlement and based on a common fallacy. No one deserves anything. The only way you get ahead in your job and in your career is by continually proving your value. No one cares about how many years you worked for the company and they donât care how hard you work. All they care about is results. 5. âThe hour long drive to work really isnât that bad.â Why do people consistently sit in traffic driving 30, 40, 50 miles to work? This time could be better used exercising or spending time with your family. The reason people find themselves in these situations is because theyâve limited their job opportunities by virtue of not building a valuable personal brand, which attracts more job opportunities in more locations. Build your brand, get more job offers, and work closer to home. 6. âMy boss isnât disrespectful, heâs just direct and straight-forward.â Thatâs very nice of you, but donât kid yourself. Your boss is a jerk and you know it! Why are you still working for him/her? 7. âMy hard work will eventually be noticed.â Maybe it will, but maybe it wonât. The longer you sit around hoping youâll be noticed, the more opportunities youâre missing at a company who will notice you. 8. âIf I hold out another 2 or 3 years Iâll get the promotion.â Maybe you will, or maybe you wonât. What data do you have to indicate that your promotion will happen in your specified timeframe? If itâs based on other colleagues whom youâve witnessed then thatâs great, but if youâre just making up an arbitrary timeline for your promotion, you might want to think again. 9. âI go above and beyond, so Iâm safe.â What makes you think youâre the only employee who works hard? Itâs truly rare that you find lazy employees, especially in professional workplaces. That being said, just because you work harder than most, that doesnât mean youâre âsafe.â 10. âMy manager likes me so Iâm all good.â Teacherâs pet stopped after the 5th grade. No one is ever âall good.â Related Posts #1 Reason You Hate Work (And How You Can Fix It) 9 Ways To Be Happy In Job You Donât Like I Hate My Work, Should I Change Jobs?
